Carlisle going continental ahead of Christmas
Last updated at 09:02, Tuesday, 04 December 2012
Carlisle's continental Christmas will arrive in the city tomorrow – with a taste of traditional festive food from across the globe.
Market stalls are dotted around the city centre to offer shoppers treats from Europe and beyond.
Organisers say the market offers “an extremely diverse and interesting experience” and traders are happy for people to sample some of the foods before they buy.
An open-air bar lets shoppers sample a festive tipple and take a break from all the Christmas shopping.
And for those who fancy trying produce from closer to home, Made in Cumbria is expected to join the market for the weekend. Each day will see different Made in Cumbria traders.
The market will have a backdrop including a sparkling 10-metre tall tree and a traditional Nativity scene right in the heart of the city centre.
The Christmas vibe is enhanced by 40,000 extra lights shining across the city centre as part of the Winter Festival.
The culmination of this week’s festivities takes place in the Victorian market this weekend, with the annual Christmas party.
Stall holders will be in fancy dress, Santa is putting in an appearance between 11am and 3pm, plus there will be face painting, Mary the Fairie and Billy The Clown.
The Christmas market, which runs until Sunday, is open from 10am to 5pm.
