Probe after metal falls from sky and hits car in Carlisle

Two salesmen have described their lucky escape after a piece of metal fell from the sky and gouged a hole in a car roof.
Phil Howe and Paul Temple were about to go home after finishing work at Lloyd BMW in Kingstown when a piece of metal plummeted and pierced a BMW 3 Series – worth about £17,000 – on the forecourt close to the pair.
Had it struck a person the consequences would probably have been fatal.
Retail sales manager Paul, 33, of Stanwix, said no one could understand where the metal came from.
“I think it probably fell out of the sky. We were just talking outside then we think a piece of metal came flying through the sky. At first we thought it came from the Honda compound next door, at the time it felt like something exploded,” said Paul.
“We wondered how on earth has it got there. It was just bizarre. Everyone was looking up at the sky. It looked like a kind of spring, a horseshoe-shaped piece of metal. We didn’t want to touch it because we thought it might be hot.
“It must have come at some speed because it has actually got stuck in the metal roof. The roof will need an extensive repair.
“One of the guys that works here is a bit of an aviation expert and he thought it might have fallen from a plane.”
Paul’s colleague, sales executive Phil, 28, of Morton, added: “I suppose we were a bit frightened, that was the initial kind of feeling, because we were just outside about to head home when it happened.
“However, it was better that it stuck in the car than in one of our heads!
“We had a bit of a look around and we couldn’t see anything. We still don’t know where it came from. We heard a strange hissing noise and then there was a bang.”
The pair then embarked on a search mission trying to find out where the piece of metal may have come from.
Mr Howe added: “We were a bit cautious when we were looking around. We thought something might go off again. Nothing like this has happened before.”
The incident, which happened on Tuesday, has been reported to the police who have taken the car and piece of metal away for more investigations.

Have your say
That's a coil Spring. They tend to snap when you drive over a large bump/pothole and they shoot off.
Richard - Why would someone selling a car need to know what a coil spring looks like? Have you ever bought a motor and asked to see the coil spring before parting with your cash?
