Carlisle court delays sentencing of serial thief

A serial thief who has been banned from several Carlisle shops will not be sentenced for another month.

Bernadette Gilheaney, 47, of Briar Bank, Belah, has admitted stealing a purse, a shopping bag and a handbag, together with their contents, in incidents on October 20 and 25 and November 11 last year.

She had been due to be sentenced at Carlisle Crown Court yesterday but a background report was not ready.

A fourth allegation that she stole a handbag from a woman on November 19 has been left lying on the court file.

Gilheaney’s barrister Elizabeth Muir has told the court that her client, who has also admitted possessing cannabis, a class B drug, has “considerable personal difficulties”.

She was granted bail on condition that she keeps out of specified shops in the city.

She will be sentenced at the crown court on May 20.
