Pranksters who poured bubble bath into a water fountain have been told to clean up their act.

The fountain was targeted on Sunday

The fountain at Hardwicke Circus in Carlisle city centre was at the centre of the antics on Sunday.

Practical jokers are believed to be responsible for creating the eye-catching effect as millions of tiny bubbles soared into the air – creating a stir among motorists and passers-by.

But Carlisle City Council, which is responsible for the fountain, has failed to see the funny side and told the mischief-makers not to repeat the stunt.

A spokeswoman for the council explained: “Whenever the fountain water is contaminated there is a cost to the local taxpayer.

“We have to add a chemical dispersant to the water, which breaks down the froth but can also clog the filters in the fountain.”

“We have to add chemicals into the water, this takes time and pulls resources away from other essential services. The filters to the fountain are also prone to damage.”

But hundreds of people took to Facebook to express their delight at the strange sight.

One person commented: “Whoever they are... I want to give them a high five.”

Another said: “This used to happen all the time. Very retro.”

Others wrote: “Poor attempt no dye in the water, old school classic”, and “that takes me back to the 1990s”.

“That reminds me of that happening once before a long time ago about 1973/4 bubbles right up Stanwix bank and covered the whole of the fountain,” another person added.
