Carlisle council’s extra charge for credit card payments

People making payments to Carlisle City Council will face an extra charge later this month.

The two per cent charge will apply to council tax payments, licensing fees and planning applications made by credit card.

The council said the charge was to off-set payments they are charged for processing credit cards – around £12,000 a year.

Les Tickner, responsible for finance with the council, said: “It will not affect other payment methods and we recommend that residents and businesses consider setting up direct debits.”

Alternative payment options like direct debit and debit card are not affected by the charge.

Planning applications made via the online Planning Portal and Licensing Applications are also not affected by the two per cent charge.

From October 16, the city council’s automated payment service phone number will change to 0845 372 4032.
