Carlisle council leader says it's time to ditch 'Great Border City' tag

Carlisle should ditch its “dated Border City slogan”, say leading politicians.

Have your say

Carlisle say its time to ditch the New Carlisle City Council leader.
Carlisle is known for that tagline and it's everywhere when you enter the City! Don't ditch it because some man doesn't like it! Ask the rest of Carlisle what they think before you do anything! It's not a knowledge city at all! Don't downgrade the city with pathetic taglines that a child would even laugh at! Come on Carlisle, sort it out.

I attended the conference, and other items were also discussed such as the lack or any suitable broadband at kingmoor park. And that 2Mb connection is apparantly "super Fast"

The bit about not being a border city actually sounded ok, and was an interesting thought for the mixed audience. But as long as its only a thought and not a new campaign to waste our money.

Carlisle needs much more cultural substance and a sea change in attitudes before it can credibly align itself with a statement like 'knowledge city'.

Paulm: 'excessive pay in the council'.

Really? Excessive pay at Carlisle City Council? Carlisle has the lowest paid chief executive in the country who just got an £8,000 pay cut and the cheapest senior management team in the country.

Never let the facts get in the way though, eh?

Little tip for you John Hendry. As the people got you into that position why not let children's schools decide with a competition.
Oh i forgot we don't matter. Were just the voters.

Julie, there was no 'tory argument'. How can you hold a political opinion on whether or not a crest as a logo or a castle? It's hardly Keynes vs Hayek.

For the love of God. The issue was simple, by having two different logos the council created confusion internally and externally. Choose one logo and keep to it.

Totally agree with Joe.For Carlisle to move forward it has to be more inclusive of outsiders and welcoming to ethnic minorities. For instance we need a mosque so we can unite as an inclusive City.Only in this way can the City grow and allow the citizens of Carlisle an opportunity to truly celebrate our ethnic diversity and multiculturalism.

On reading this my initial thought was the same as Geoff has already said - how much will this cost us?
A great job is already being done in difficult financial times to attract visitors to Carlisle and raise its profile nationally and internationally. The most significant difference could be made by the people of Carlisle themselves being good ambassadors of this city. A good impression given to visitors is worth more than a good slogan. I am certain that the newly elected council have a lot more pressing needs which should be at the top of their list to help the people of Carlisle.

Welcome to Carlisle
The Border City
Absolutely nothing wrong with that. What a pointless exercise. It appears some people have problems with their egos. Wanting to have their names associated with change in a citys' history.

I would like to openly apologise to the ex leader Mr Mitchelson for any criticism I have made about him in the past. Although he in my opinion the Conservatives did little to encourage the growth and development of the city he never once suggested such ludicrous comments that have been falling from the mouth of Dr Hendry pre and post election victory.
I hope that someone in the Labour council will have the guts to challenge him for his position in a vote of no confidence.
Out of the frying pan and into the fire!!!!
