Carlisle child neglect dad sentenced by city court

A drunken dad who was staggering and stinking of alcohol while in a supermarket with his two young children has been sentenced by a court.

The 40-year-old man admitted failing to provide a specimen for analysis and child neglect.

But he was spared an immediate jail sentence by North Cumbria Magistrates' Court in Carlisle today.

The court heard how he took his two children, both younger than 10, to the cinema on May 30 before heading to Morrison’s, on Scotland Road, in his car to shop.

The police were called and the man failed a breath test and was arrested and taken to Durranhill police station. He failed to provide a breath test there because “he wasn’t blowing hard enough”.

He told police he had taken half a bottle of vodka to the cinema and drank it there before driving to Morrison’s, with his children in the car.

The man was sentenced to 100 days in custody for the neglect and 63 days, to run concurrently, for the other charge. Both sentences were suspended for a year.

He was put under probation supervision for 12 months and must carry out 150 hours of unpaid work. The man was disqualified from driving for 36 months and must pay £85 costs.

The father lives in Carlisle but cannot be named for legal reasons.
