'Careless' driver pulled out in front of Cumbria police van

A motorist was fined after he admitted driving without due care attention – by pulling out into the path of a police van.
Brian Logan, 36, of Ropery Street, Maryport, did not appear at Carlisle Magistrates’ Court, choosing to admit the charge by post.
The court heard that the incident happened at about 1.40am on August 16, as Logan drove his Chrysler car along the A596 near Aspatria.
He had been travelling behind a car and a wagon but pulled out to overtake, straight into the path of an oncoming police Transit van. Both vehicles were forced to “brake harshly” to avoid a collision.
Magistrates were told that Logan held a full driving licence and had no penalty points.
They fined him £37 and ordered him to pay a £15 victim surcharge and £15 court costs. Logan also received three penalty points on his licence.
