An elderly man was taken to hospital after a car crashed into a set of traffic lights.

Police were called to the crash, which is understood to have involved only one vehicle, at about 9pm.

A Ford Ka collided with a set of traffic lights between Stanwix Bank and Brampton Road, flattening the pole holding up the lights.

A spokesman for Cumbria police said the collision had subsequently knocked out the power to other traffic lights in the area.

The driver of the vehicle, a man, was uninjured. His male passenger was taken by ambulance to Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle, as a precaution because of his age.

Officers worked to get the car recovered as a "priority" and to ensure the power was restored to the traffic lights.

The lights - with the exception of the flattened pole - were working again by 10.05pm.
