By-election date is set

VOTERS in Upperby will be asked to elect two councillors in a Carlisle City Council by-election on June 12.

Upperby should have gone to the polls with the rest of the city on May 1. But the death of BNP candidate Les Griffiths during the campaign caused the election to be postponed.

Since then sitting Labour councillor June Martlew has also died, creating a second vacancy in Upperby.

Both will be filled on the same day.

Electors have two votes and the main parties are each likely to field two candidates.

Nominations close on Thursday while the deadline for new postal-vote applications is May 28.

Though our hospitals are still in special measures, are you encouraged by slight improvement?

Yes. It's a start. The standards we want will take time

No. Patients deserve better. We're at risk so long as hospitals aren't good enough

I don't believe hospitals in Cumbria will ever achieve the excellence they've promised
