Hundreds of jobs taken up at new Cumbrian superstore

Nearly a third of the 300 jobs up for grabs at Carlisle’s new Sainsbury’s store have been filled just a month after recruitment began.

Store manager David Morris said they had confirmed posts with 30 staff and offered jobs to another 50 hopefuls. They were waiting for details of possible start dates.

Another 440 interviews have been lined up to take place over the next four weeks, ahead of the store’s opening in Caldewgate this autumn.

“The way that the recruitment process is organised means that from time to time further employment opportunities will be placed online,” he said.

“I would encourage anyone who wishes to work at Sainsbury’s to keep periodically checking our jobs website.”

Mr Morris said the supermarket chain had been inundated by people wanting to find out more about the jobs available.

A jobs fair last month saw nearly 4,000 people turn up for more information.

Two information days were held at Carlisle College and a college spokeswoman said 3,800 people had attended.

Work on constructing the £40m store started in March and much of the building has already been completed but roadworks on Castle Way have been causing major tailbacks at peak times.

They eased slightly last week when both lanes opened at the Shaddongate junction for traffic heading along Castle Way.

The 60,000sq ft store will have parking for 446 cars and a petrol station. It is due to open in October.
