Houses on site of former Carlisle pub and restaurant

Housing is going up on the site of a landmark Carlisle pub, demolished earlier this year.
The Enterprise in Briar Bank, Belah, which opened in 1975, was the first pub to be built in the city following the end of the state-management scheme in 1973.
Since 2007 it has traded as an Indian restaurant, the Spice Enterprise, but this closed in March.
The site’s owner, Maris Properties of Carlisle, bulldozed the pub around Easter and is building a courtyard development of 14 two and three-bedroom link houses. Work is due to be completed by spring next year.
Some will be for rent and others for sale priced around £110,000 for the two-bedroom houses and £125,000 for the three-bedroom properties.
The scheme, known as Greenwood Court, is the third and final phase of the redevelopment of the Enterprise site. Ten homes have already been built adjacent to the former pub.
Stephen Lavery, a director of Maris Properties said: “We are aware of the economic climate and the current state of the housing market but we have started work because of the success of the first two phases.
“Good-value family homes are always in demand.”
Each house will have a garden and an off-street parking space.
There will also be six guest parking spaces.
The homes will be finished in brick and render under grey concrete roof tiles. Planning consent was confirmed on August 1.
The planning application says: “The form, layout, scale and appearance of the dwellings has been designed to ensure that they positively respect the character and appearance of their surroundings.
“This development would introduce a much-needed boost to the local economy at a time when employment is falling and house prices are increasingly unaffordable.
“It is the developer’s aim to produce good-quality, economic housing at a very reasonable price either to the owner market or the rental market.”
