Cumbrian Seafoods stripped of certificate after shrimp label blunder

Cumbrian Seafoods has had its membership of a fisheries certification scheme withdrawn after it wrongly labelled shrimp products.

The firm, which employs 117 people at its factory in Whitehaven, had its membership of the Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) scheme revoked after it marketed shrimp from a non BAP-certified source as coming from a compliant facility.

Cumbrian Seafoods, which began life in Maryport, is now based in County Durham after being taken over by Youngs Seafood owner Lion Capital last year. The company is currently in a three-month consultation with staff over proposed redundancies at its Whitehaven plant.

BAP executive director Jim Heerin said: “BAP vigorously defends the integrity of its brand, upon which the viability and credibility of the whole BAP certification process depends.

“For this reason, the BAP programme requires robust traceability systems in all certified facilities.”

Cumbrian Seafoods’ new management said it had terminated any identification of product as coming from BAP-certified facilities and has provided assurances that it is implementing systems that ensure misbranding and misrepresentation do not occur.
