Carlisle's newest supermarket was today officially opened to the public.
Budding teenage Paralympian Anna Nicholson was the guest of honour for the 9am launch of the £40 million Sainsbury’s Caldewgate store.
The 16-year-old Brampton athlete, the 300 staff who will work at the shop, local dignitaries and pupils from Caldewlea School watched Charlotte, five and Abigail Renwick, two, help store manager Dave Morris cut the ribbon to mark the occasion.
The supermarket chain claims the shop will provide “a much needed boost” for the previously run-down area.
Mr Morris said the opening marked the culmination of many years hard work in bringing the company to Carlisle.
“We have been working hard to bring Carlisle residents a new store to be proud of, while looking to improve what was becoming quite a run-down part of the city.
“I believe the new store, with the new jobs it has brought to Carlisle, will prove to be a real boost to our city," he said.
As part of the 60,000 sq ft store's build, a new traffic system has been installed in the Caldewgate area.
