Liam Stubbs, 18, was nominated for the JB Wilkinson Shield by his assessor at Carlisle College on Victoria Place and went on to be named winner at an award ceremony in Newcastle.

Eleven colleges across the north of the country each put forward a candidate and this is the second year running that Carlisle College’s nomination has won.

Liam began plumbing with his grandfather during the school holidays and now works alongside him at Robek Plumbing and Heating in the city.

Liam said: “I’m really pleased and I think I have done quite well to win it.

“You have got to work hard and it was a good night in Newcastle.

“I think it’s a good advertisement for the college because they’ve won it two years on the bounce now.”

The award is for apprentices aged under 21, who must be in full-time employment and either have or be working towards an NVQ level two in plumbing.

Grahame Gilbert, a Carlisle College assessor for Liam, said he won the competition thanks to his attention to detail and hard work.

Mr Gilbert said: “The exam results he got were really good and his academic side is also really good.

“He’s a very polite, sociable lad and put a lot of effort into it.

“He has enthusiasm, determination and high-quality work.

“His exam results are the best we’ve had in a good few years.”

Carlisle College student Michael Braithwaite won the previous year’s award.
