Unemployment has risen in Cumbria, for the fifth month in a row.

There were 5,435 job hunters claiming Jobseeker's Allowance or Universal Credit last month, 1.8 per cent of the workforce, up from a restated figure of 5,270 in March.

The claimant count rose in three of the county's six districts.

Allerdale saw the biggest rise in claimants, the number there rose by 80 to 1,445 (2.5 per cent).

Carlisle was next, where the figure rose by 65 to 1,035 (1.4 per cent), followed by Copleland with a rise of 40 to 1,170 (2.6 per cent).

In Barrow, Eden and South Lakeland the jobless totals fell by five to 1,165 (2.8 per cent, ) 245 (0.8) per cent and 380 (0.6 per cent) respectively.

Nationally, the UK's unemployment rate has fallen to a 32-year low as a record number of people are in work, figures show.

The jobless total fell by 53,000 to 1.54m in the quarter to March, a rate of 4.6 per cent, the lowest since summer 1975.

Employment has increased by 122,000 to almost 32m, the highest since records began in 1971, reported the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
