Cumbrian food firm Traybakes is having its products served at this year’s Wimbledon tennis tournament.

This comes after a two-year-long expansion of the Penrith-based company, which has also seen it move premises, invest in new equipment and double its workforce.

It has also been approached by internet giant Amazon to sell its produce.

The firm, which is based at the Food Technology Centre at Redhills Business Park, manufactures a variety of cakes which are produced in service trays for the food service industry and in individually wrapped slices or shelf-ready cartons.

It was set up in 1990 in a converted dairy in Northumberland and moved to Cumbria in 2013. It received regional growth fund investment of £24,000 from Cumbria Local Economic Partnership (LEP) in 2014, which managing director Justine Carruthers said had helped the firm expand and put it “different playing field”.

She said: “It doesn’t seem a minute ago that we were a team of 10 but we now have 20 members of staff in all as the orders keep coming in. We have recently secured big contracts with major distributors like Amazon and North South Retail. Those successes are already opening up new opportunities and we’re in discussion with several other household names.

“We have also been able to invest in a new integrated business system, with hardware and software which manages the entire production process from procurement right through to despatch. That’s been vital in managing these new, larger national accounts. The funding has supported a complete rebrand for us too. That has included a new logo, packaging and the addition of a smart trade stand for exhibiting.”

Director of Cumbria Local Enterprise Partnership Graham Haywood adds: “Traybakes’ success is an inspiring example of how smaller businesses can achieve rapid growth with fit-for-purpose premises, equipment and financial backing. It is another clear illustration of how regional growth fund investment and business support is helping local firms compete and thrive in bigger markets.”
