A new restaurant in Carlisle city centre aims to fuse local produce with the best of the USA.

The Script @ No. 4 is now trading on Green Market with the aim of catering for everyone from people who want a morning coffee to those out for an evening meal.

Owner Chris Archibald got the idea for the venue after making several trips across the Atlantic and is confident it will contribute to the city's growing food culture.

"Our ethos is local produce fused with a New York state of mind," he said.

"I got the idea from my travels around the world with my wife and children."

The menu includes American staples including pancakes, waffles and chicken wings and Mr Archibald is determined that the restaurant will have customer service which is common in US restaurants. Another way in which the American theme is continued is that waiting staff are called servers.

"We want to create a relaxed, informal atmosphere with high standards of service."

The venue employs 10 people and is housed in a former pharmacy, which has been refurbished at a cost of more than £100,000. This location led to the name 'The Script', shortened from 'prescription'.

It is next door to La Baguette, which is also owned by Mr Archibald.

"The historic quarter has changed in the last three or four years and has become extremely foodie with the likes of the Shabby Scholar and the Dutch Uncle, there are a lot of food places up here."

Mr Archibald said his family had played a big part in the restaurant.

His wife's love of New York had helped inspire the idea behind the venture and his daughter Emily, 17, would be working there before going to university.

The restaurant opens from 9am and has a late licence.
