Construction and services group Kier has landed a £140 million contract with Highways England.

The 15-year deal, which starts in April, will see it provide repair and maintenance services to area 13 of the Highways England network, which covers Cumbria and North Lancashire.

The agreement covers traffic management, emergency incident response, defect repairs and severe weather services.

The FTSE 250 firm said it was also in late-stage talks over a two-year deal to provide maintenance services to areas six and eight covering East Anglia.

Chief executive Haydn Mursell said: "These awards reflect Kier's ability to tailor its services to Highways England's evolving delivery model, as well as maintain the group's leadership in the growing UK highways management and maintenance market."

Kier was the main contractor brought in to repair the A591 in Cumbria after Storm Desmond washed away a lengthy stretch of carriageway north of Dunmail Raise last December.

The road, which is the main arterial link between Keswick and Ambleside, reopened in May.
