WORK has started on a major overhaul of a pub that will lead to its staff numbers doubling.

The Hazeldene pub and hotel, in Gretna Green, is being transformed with a £220,000 refurbishment, which will create 15 new jobs.

It is also launching the area’s first delivery service for British food and beer.

These changes are being carried out over the next seven weeks and will also result in a new look.

The restaurant and lounge are being extended into rooms which are currently unused.

Alongside this, an outside deck is being created which will seat 40 people and have heaters and retractable cover so it can be used all year round.

This work will also see the building completely redecorated with the kitchen and bathrooms getting a complete makeover.

The Hazeldene is owned by Star Pubs & Bars – itself owned by brewing giants Heineken – and the licensees are Paula Baillie and Kieran White, who are celebrating their second anniversary in charge this month.

Along with the the changes to the fabric new services are also being introduced including a new barista-quality coffee machine and an extension of opening hours, which will see the Hazeldene open at 8am to serve breakfast and also offer services throughout the morning.

Mr White said: “It’s great to be able to give the pub the TLC and investment it deserves. It’s also our small way of thanking the community for the warm welcome they have given our family. Gretna Green feels like home now thanks to their support.”

Lawson Mountstevens, managing director for Star Pubs & Bars, said: “Kieran and Paula’s success in turning round the Hazeldene is a real tribute to their commitment, hard work and talent.

“Heineken is a passionate supporter of the great British pub and is investing in pubs like the Hazeldene to help them deliver excellent quality, attract customers and thrive at the heart of their communities for years to come.”
