A Cumbrian children’s fashion startup has been shortlisted for three national awards, less than three months after it was set up.

Lakes and Lambs, which is based in Plumpton, near Penrith, has been nominated for prizes at the Rural Business Awards; best rural start up, best rural clothing or accessories business and rural entrepreneur of the year.

These awards are designed to celebrate achievements by all companies which are based in the English countryside.

The firm was set up by Jannike Taylor and designs and manufactures overalls, which can be worn over outdoor clothes.

They are manufactured in Turkey and described as lightweight, breathable, durable and water resistant, and are available for children aged one-to-five years.

In August the business took a silver prize at the Junior Design Awards.

Mrs Taylor said: “I think this is just because we are doing something a bit different – there are not any other patterned boiler suits on the market.

“We have had a lot of people saying to us that this is such a good idea.”

Beech House Holidays, a firm which provides self-catering accommodation in Dalston, has also been shorlisted for an award. This is the best rural tourism business.

Winners will be announced in October.
