A new branch of Tesco's One Stop convenience store chain is trading in Carlisle.

The former Spar shop in Fusehill Street, opposite the University Cumbria's campus, has joined the chain.

One Stop is owned by Tesco but, as with Spar, stores are operated by franchisees.

David Forrester, who held the Spar franchise, will continue as the One Stop franchisee. The store will close in August for a refurbishment, which is expected to take less than a week.

Carlisle already has one One Stop, in Newtown Road, acquired from the north-east based Mills Group in 2010.

A One Stop spokesman said: “We’re delighted that the Spar on Fusehill Street, which has been a shop at the heart of the community for nearly 30 years, has chosen to take up a franchise arrangement with One Stop.

"This will deliver a great service and new look for Carlisle customers and we look forward to David welcoming people to his One Stop store later this summer.”

One Stop has been wholly owned by Tesco since 2003 but is run as a separate business.
