Barclays has announced it will close its branch in Longtown this year.

The branch, which is in Bridge Street, will shut its doors for the last time on Friday, October 6.

Barclays has blamed the closure on falling customer numbers, with the majority choosing to make use of other branches.

A spokesman said: “The way customers undertake their banking is changing as people increasingly use online, telephone and mobile devices. At Barclays in Longtown, customer usage has continued to decline in recent years and 60 per cent of our customers now regularly use alternative branches, which is why we have taken the difficult decision to close it.

"We hope that the availability of our other Barclays branch at English Street, Carlisle, and access to services at the local Post Office located at 21 Swan Street, Longtown, along with our range of digital channels will help to ease the transition for our customers.”

He also urged anyone who had concerns about banking after the closure to contact the branch to discuss their options and said the firm would look to have sessions on making use of digital banking.

There will be no compulsory redundancies at the branch, which has two staff.
