The bravery of a young teenager who has battled serious illness will be recognised with a special award.

Jordan Carleton will be one of a handful of youngsters receiving a North East Brave Hearts Award tonight during a ceremony at St James Park, Newcastle.

The 13-year-old, of Lochinvar Close, Longtown, needs regular treatment for an inflammatory condition but has been especially unwell this year.

Mum Sonia, 37, said: “I nominated Jordan back in December when he was really really ill, and we found out he’s been chosen.

“He is really excited, but he’s pleased that he has been recognised – he has been very ill all year from January to now, and has been in and out of hospital, trying different medications and even undergoing surgery.”

The award provides memories for the entire family, as they will be picked up in a limousine before being whisked off to Newcastle for the special day.

Jordan will be presented with a trophy and a gift he has chosen – in his case, a much-coveted limited edition Halo Xbox 360 games console.

Sonia added: “It’s been hyped as a special day for the whole family, so Jordan is really excited to get the Xbox, but his sister Eryn is looking forward to the limo ride – she’s only seven, and so she thinks Newcastle is on the other side of the world.

“She can’t believe she’s going all that way in a limousine.”

His proud mum said she nominated Jordan for the courage and bravery he has shown.

The teenager held a race night earlier this year to raise money for children’s charity Dreamflight, which organises trips for sick children.

Thanks to Dreamflight, Jordan jetted off to Disney World, Florida, last year.
