BNP demands police probe after members list posted on internet

The British National Party has demanded a police investigation after a full list of party members was posted on the internet.

In a statement on its website, it says that the list with the names, addresses and contact details of more than 12,000 individuals is “essentially genuine.”

The list claims to include former police officers as well as members of the armed forces.

The list - seen by the News & Star - states that there are more than 150 party members in towns and villages across Cumbria.

It gives their names, addresses, telephone numbers and, in some cases, email addresses.

It also gives extra information for some members, including their occupation, whether they are “candidate willing” or an activist.

Members in Cumbria include a tiler/plumber, NHS medical secretary, ex-serviceman and a business consultant.

Other details say that one man in Barrow had his membership suspended for a week in September 2005 due to an “inappropriate tattoo” while a woman in Keswick would not be renewing her membership in 2007 because she “took offence to newspaper reports about the party.”

BNP leader Nick Griffin said: “We’ll be asking the police to investigate. It’s a list which is now just over a year old.

“Having spent a lot of money to secure our members’ privacy we are disappointed that it’s been breached.”

In his statement on the BNP website, Mr Griffin described the publication as “a disgraceful act of treachery” by former BNP staff members who had subsequently been sacked.

He said that he had lodged a complaint with Dyfed-Powys police on the grounds that the publication breached human rights and data protection laws.

According to the BNP, the published list is based on its 2007 membership list although a number of names of people who were not or are not party members had been added.

Earlier this year, the party said that it obtained an injunction at the High Court in Manchester banning any publication of the list.

Have your say

The comments made in your newspaper about the members of the BNP are frankly, ridiculous. It is obvious that none of your reporters have taken the time to check this party out. It appears that your journalists must just parrot what is said in the left wing liberal media. It's agreat shame that our local paper does not show any indepence of thought. Why produce a news paper at all, when what you print is other peoples veiws [the labour party].
From a proud patriot and BNP member.

Do you welcome the return of mischevious schoolboy Just William to TV?

Yes, it's all good, clean fun (apart from the mud)

No, he's a bit last century. His 'antics' would be called vandalism today
