Firefighters rushed to Overend Road, in Whitehaven where one described the blaze as “ferocious”.

The garage belonged to a nearby home and had a car in it.

Firefighters were called to the incident yesterday afternoon.

The blaze was almost out when they realised the building contained cannisters of flammable gas – propane and CO2.

They then evacuated the area while these cooled down.

An hour later they ruled the cannisters safe and tidied up the scene.

They returned to Whitehaven station just after 5pm.
