Best feet forward for youngsters at annual Solway Dance Festival
Published at 11:27, Monday, 03 September 2012
AROUND 100 young dancers took part in the Queen of the Solway Dance Festival at the weekend.
The festival is held in two parts. The main event, an open competition attracting entries from as far afield as Newcastle and Lancashire, was in June.
This Saturday and Sunday there was another opportunity for local dancers.
The second session is open only to dance schools within 12 miles of Maryport.
Youngsters aged from three to their early twenties competed in six disciplines at the Wave Centre – tap, modern, song and dance, ballet, national, and character.
Sandra Chapman, the festival secretary, said: “It has been as good as previous years and the standard is just as high as it is in the open event.”
The ultimate accolade, the Festival Award, went to 15-year-old Megan Binns of the Lakeland School of Dance and Performing Arts at Branthwaite, near Workington.
This year there was a new award, Dance of the Festival, introduced at the initiative of adjudicator Nicola Read, from Morecambe, who also judged it.
The winner was Loren Moore, 18, of the Mulgrew School of Dance in Maryport.
This is the 31st year that the Queen of the Solway Dance Festival has been held and the 30th year that there has been a separate event for local dancers.
