A motorist who was twice the drink-drive limit when he smashed into two cars and a house has been banned from driving for 17 months and fined £275.

Serving soldier Peter Andrew Reid, 23, of Westmorland Street, Denton Holme, Carlisle, admitted drink driving when he appeared before Carlisle magistrates.

Adrienne Harris, prosecuting, told the court that Reid was driving a BMW on November 30 when his car mounted the pavement in Westmorland Street.

He hit two cars before crashing into a house causing extensive damage to the brickwork and a downstairs window.

A breath test revealed he had 70mcgms of alcohol in 100ml of breath – the legal limit is 35.

Reid apologised to the court and to the owners of the house and the cars.

He said: “This was the most stupid thing I have done in my life.”

The court was read a letter by Captain Steven Bee on behalf of Reid’s commanding officer.

He said Reid had a chance of promotion next year but this would now be put on hold as a result of the court case.
