Road rage: Badger

Roads bosses have closed Whinlatter Pass, the B5292, between Braithwaite and the Whinlatter Visitors’ Centre for urgent repairs.

The road had collapsed and inspections revealed a badgers’ sett just inches from the surface.

Badger setts are protected by law, so any action needs to be agreed with English Nature, a process that could take up to 30 days.

Cumbria County Council hopes to come up with a temporary solution to reopen the road, while it applies for a licence for a permanent solution. The road remains closed to most users apart from pedestrians and cyclists.

The road is closed west from Woodlands for a 20m stretch. A signed diversion is in place.
