Bad weather scuppers opening of new west Cumbrian bridge
Last updated at 12:22, Friday, 30 November 2012
Bad weather has delayed the opening today of the new Camerton bridge.
High river levels have stopped the completion of cladding work on the bridge which links the village with Great Clifton.
A site visit will be held today to assess the remaining work on the bridge which replaces the river crossing damaged in the 2009 floods.
Meanwhile, the final pieces of Workington’s temporary road bridge will leave the town tomorrow.
The structure is going to Cornwall to be used while maintenance is carried out on a bridge there.
Work will now be done to reinstate the riverbanks on both sides of the River Derwent where the bridge was removed, and to complete footways between the river and Northside Road.
The temporary road bridge was put in place in April 2010 after the 2009 floods severed road links.
Work to remove it began last month after the new Northside Bridge was opened by the Princess Royal.
