Axed City Hopper buses return in Carlisle

Two of the axed City Hopper bus services in Carlisle will return short term as Cumbrian firm Reays launches a passengers’ discount card.

In March, the 63 and 63A routes stopped running, along with the 64 and 70, which both remain out of service.

However, the 63 and 63A will be back on the road next week for seven days, following their old routes into and out of the city centre, taking in Harraby and Upperby.

The former goes from Belle Vue and calls at the Cumberland Infirmary. The latter goes to and from Morton Park via Wigton Road.

And depending on the success of their return, the 63 and 63A could even be back on a permanent basis, says managing director Chris Reay.

He said: “If we attract enough customers and it works, we could re-introduce these routes on a permanent basis later in the year.

“Since finishing them, we had so many letters and cards and people coming into our travel centre saying they used them and how much they missed them.”

The Reays Loyalty Card is free and will offer holders a variety of money-saving deals every month on City Hopper routes as well as on the firm’s holidays, coach hire and ticket/travel packages for concerts. Application forms for the new credit card-style loyalty cards will be available from tomorrow at Reays’ Travel Centre in Devonshire Street, Carlisle, and on-line at www.reays.co.uk.

The first cards will then be issued next Monday ahead of the return of the 63 and 63A City Hopper services for one week from Wednesday, May 15 to Wednesday, May 22.

All Reays Loyalty Card holders will receive free bus travel throughout the whole week on both the 63 and 63A services.

Mr Reay said: “Hopefully we can put a smile on their faces for a week, especially if they get free travel with a free Reays Loyalty Card.”

Reays’ two other City Hopper services – the 64A and the 75 – will both continue to run as normal. Fare-paying passengers without Reays Loyalty Cards can still use these services and the 63 and 63A.
