‘Axe’ man found carrying knife on street

A man was arrested for being out on the street with a knife a few days before he was sentenced for running “amok” with an axe, a court heard.

But the judge who gave Daniel Irving, 24, a suspended prison sentence for the offence involving the axe was not made aware of the one with the knife, so although he could have been dealt with for both at the same time, he wasn’t.

A month ago, Carlisle Crown Court heard that Irving, of Senhouse Street, Siddick, near Workington, had rushed out of the house in a “state of emotional distress” after seeing his father beaten up, and used an axe to threaten to kill the man who attacked his father.

For that he was given a nine-month jail term, suspended for two years, and 120 hours unpaid work.

The same court heard he would probably not have got a much stiffer sentence if his more recent offence with the knife had been taken into account at the same time.

That involved his going out with a kitchen knife into the street near his home to have an argument with a man who is now his friend.

Irving pleaded guilty to having an article with a blade in a public place.

He was remanded on bail and will be sentenced on August 10.
