All-female election shortlist for Workington would be 'wrong'

An all-female shortlist to be Workington’s next MP would be the “wrong move” according to a leading member of the town’s Labour Party.

Tony Cunningham has announced that he will not be seeking re-election at the general election in 2015.

The Workington Labour Party will begin the process of replacing their MP at a meeting this evening, where they will decide between selecting an open list of candidates and an all-female one.

Labour councillor Len Davies, who is also the Mayor of Allerdale, said that – in his opinion – an all-female list would only present problems.

“It has to be the best candidate regardless of race or gender,” he told the News & Star. “An all-male list would be wrong too.

“If you’re elected from an all-women list you’re open to attack, with people saying you only won because you are a woman. I believe it should be a mixed panel and good luck to all of them. The most important thing is getting someone who will fight for us in Westminster.”

The group’s decision will be delivered to Labour’s National Executive Council (NEC) who will decide whether or not to uphold it.

The party is keen to increase the number of its female MPs at Westminster, and is directing local parties to draw up all-women shortlists depending on local circumstances.
