Air ambulance called after schoolboy hit by van

A schoolboy was injured after being hit by a van in Wigton.

The 10-year-old boy, who is from the town, is understood to have been struck by the vehicle as he stepped onto Lowmoor Road, near Nelson Thomlinson School, at about 4pm yesterday.

Initial calls reported that a cyclist was hit by the van and the air ambulance was called. However it later emerged that the youngster had suffered only cuts and bruises to his legs.

His mother was at the scene with him while an ambulance crew assessed his condition, but the boy was subsequently allowed home.

The road was blocked briefly while emergency services attended the crash.

The driver of the white Ford Transit van was uninjured in the collision.
