Lynda Williams, 40, of Moorclose, Workington, admits she had an ‘old-fashioned’ television, which is about 22-in wide (and almost as deep).

An ardent Newcastle United, Workington Reds and England football supporter, the shop assistant admits that watching the Euro 2012 matches so far had been slightly difficult.

Despite this, it was only chance that led Miss Williams to enter the News & Star’s reverse auction competition. Entrants text in their bids for the item, and the lowest unique bid scoops the prize.

“I had just topped up money on my phone when I saw the competition in the paper,” she recalled. “I texted about five or six times, and got a few texts back telling me some were not unique. I couldn’t believe it when the phone rang and told me 54p had won! I am sounbelievably chuffed, it is just amazing and I am so grateful.”

The mum-of-three spent less than £10 including the 54p winning bid and the cost of the messages, and laughed that it was a fair price for the full HD TV.

Miss Williams said she will make sure she is recording Sunday night’s quarter final match between England and Italy, to enjoy on the large screen later.

“I will try and work it,” she explained, “because I love dressing up and getting in the mood.”

In the meantime, Miss Williams is relying on her son to set up the television.
