A pair of talented young chefs got a taste of success when they triumphed in a national competition.

Niall Frith and his team mate William Bolsover won the title of UK Young Seafood Chef of the Year at a competition in Grimsby.

A panel of celebrity chef judges were wowed by their brined salmon and and smoked shallot puree starter and pan-fried hake main course.

The young chefs, who both recently graduated from Kendal College after completing the level 3 Diploma in professional cookery, went head-to-head against some of the most talented young seafood chefs from around the UK.

Celebrity chefs, including Nathan Outlaw of BBC Two's Great British Menu, cast their expert eyes over the competition.

The team won a trophy; a medal; a £500 voucher each; a Thermomix TM5 food Processor; a £1,000 voucher for their college to spend on Russums catering equipment; and a three-day culinary experience from sponsor Koppert Cress.

The two young chefs, along with their college lecturer Yannick Lequitte, flew to The Netherlands to enjoy the Koppert Cress experience.

William said: "We are absolutely delighted to have won the competition and we're really happy with how we performed, especially in the newly introduced invention test."

Niall added: "We are passionate about seafood and have worked hard to get here so are thrilled to have won.

"We have had a great time in Holland and wish to thank our hosts for their hospitality."

A spokesman for the competition said: "These are our young chefs of tomorrow, and to reach these standards is a credit to both them and their lecturers at Kendal College who have encouraged them to show off these skills within a competition.

"The opportunity has provided Niall and William with invaluable experience."

Since the duo graduated from college they have both taken up full time positions: Niall works at 1863 Bistro at Pooley Bridge, where the winning starter was recently on the menu; and William works at the Old Stamp House Restaurant Ambleside.
