The president of Workington Rotary Club is set to attend centenary celebrations this weekend for The Rotary Foundation.

Patricia Hoggarth is due to join rotary members from around the north west at the celebrations in Blackburn.

An exhibition is also on display, including a stall about a major fundraising campaign carried out by Rotary Clubs of Workington Derwent and Workington, and the community.

Mrs Hoggarth said she is proud to be be part of the rotary club, which extends across the world, and helps so many people.

She said: "We always think we are on our own, and think how much can we do? When you join an organisation like Rotary you work with other people that are of similar mind, as you want to do something good in the world, and you have an opportunity to do it.

"We work with rotary clubs around the world. Whatever is decided will be carried out thousands of miles away. That is the most wonderful thing the rotary club can do."

Mrs Hoggarth has previously received an award on behalf of the two Workington clubs which initiated the fundraising campaign in Workington. It took place following the devastating Super Typhoon Haiyan, which swept across the Philippines, in 2013.

Following the tragic event, the two Workington joined together to collect £5,049 from the community. This set the ball rolling for other rotary clubs in Cumbria, Lancashire, South Korea and the Philippines to give funding. This cash was then match-funded by the Rotary Foundation, taking the total to £44,000.

This weekend's event, at Blackburn Cathedral, will be a chance for rotarians along with the Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Cumbria, Vice Lord Lieutenant of Lancashire and other dignitaries to celebrate the foundation's centenary.

One of the major projects of Rotary worldwide is the eradication of polio and the End Polio Now campaign in the North West.

It has also recently been announced that the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation are continuing their support for Rotary's End Polio Now. For every £1 that Rotarians raise for polio the Foundation will donate £2. The commitment has been going for several years and will continue for another three years at least.

The Rotary International target is $50 million a year.
