THIRTY kilometres of old water pipes in the Carlisle area are to be replaced as part of a £14 million investment.

The programme of work by United Utilities (UU), which starts today m onday , will be delivered in several phases over three years.

During this first stage, which is expected to be completed by October, engineers will replace the pipes between Cummersdale to Upperby and Harraby.

They will use modern pipe laying techniques to minimise disruption to traffic.

Some of Carlisle’s water pipes are more than 100 years old and are reaching the end of their useful life.

UU say the investment will ensure a reliable service for decades. Alex Bolton, area business manager, said: “This investment programme will upgrade pipes serving 43,000 homes and businesses in Carlisle, providing customers with a reliable, high quality water service for many years to come.

“We will be liaising closely with local residents and businesses as we progress with the work.”

The first phase of work will be taking place in Durranhill, Blackwell Road, Mount Pleasant Road, Kirklands Road, Upperby Road, Eastern Way, London Road and Keenan Park.

The second phase, scheduled for Autumn 2016, will focus on the Scotby, Wetheral and Cumwhinton areas.
