A £400,000 scheme to help carry out essential repairs to Carlisle Cathedral is underway.

Anyone walking through the grounds of the city centre site this week will have noticed a huge crane lifting pieces of scaffolding into place so work can get started.

Workmen have been busy constructing a temporary roof structure in preparation for the main work.

The programme of repairs will see the building's nave and nave aisle roof renovated.

The building is one of 39 cathedrals across the country that have benefited from a £14.5m pot of cash set up to commemorate World War One.

The money will also enable the renewal of rain water goods at high level in order to ensure that the building is kept water-tight for future generations.

The Dean of Carlisle, the Very Reverend Mark Boyling told the News & Star that the main body of work should begin before the end of this month.
