An Egremont woman was banned from driving for 14 months after admitting drink-driving and leaving her friend trapped in the car after crashing.

Deborah Woodburn, 41, of St John's Terrace, Bigrigg, admitted drink driving and failing to stop after a road accident when she appeared at magistrates court in Workington on Friday.

Rachel Parker, prosecuting, said the incident happened on May 13 at 5.25am when Woodburn was driving her car on the A595 at Bigrigg with a friend as a passenger.

She said "She came round a corner and lost control of her car and hit a telegraph pole on Springfield Road." Damage was caused to the pole and a wall.

Miss Parker added Woodburn left her friend trapped in the front seat and walked home.

Later she told police she had been drinking Prosecco and she was found to have 41 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal drink drive limit is 35 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath.

Woodburn, who was representing herself, handed a letter to judge Gerald Chalk.

The judge said: "I give you full credit for pleading guilty at the earliest opportunity, you are of previous good character and it really saddens me to see you before the court."

Woodburn was fined £125 for drink driving, £100 for failing to stop after a road accident and was ordered to pay £85 costs and £30 victim surcharge.

She was also disqualified from driving but Judge Chalk told her if she successfully complets a drink driver's rehabilitation course her disqualification would be shortened by 14 weeks.

He added: "If you drive whilst disqualified you'll be sent to prison and I'm sure you've got far more sense than that. I don't want to see you in this court again."
