A woman had a “clump” of hair torn from her head moments before she was allegedly raped, a court has heard.

Robert Woods, 47, is on trial at Carlisle Crown Court. He has pleaded not guilty to two charges which allege that he raped the woman and sexually assaulted her.

These relate to the same alleged incident, which is said to have occurred on July 9 last year.

Jurors have seen video footage of an interview the woman gave to police. She claimed Woods “grabbed” her hair after “getting a bit rough”.

The woman said she told Woods he was hurting and insisted he “get off”.

Opening the case, prosecutor Kim Whittlestone had said to the jury: “You will see photographs during the course of this trial that some of her hair was pulled out.

“A clump of her hair was left on a sofa.”

That imagery was shown to jurors as the woman gave evidence from behind a screen.

She told the court Woods had been hurting her by “pulling” her hair. The woman confirmed she was also left with bruises above her knee due to Woods allegedly holding his hand down on her leg.

“What was happening to you?” Miss Whittlestone asked.

“He was raping me,” the woman tearfully replied.

The woman confirmed she sent texts saying “help” and “now” to a male after the alleged attack while Woods remained at the scene.

Asked to describe his demeanour at that time, she said: “Aggressive. Horrible.”

Woods, of Thomlinson Avenue, Carlisle, is said to have told police after he was arrested the woman was a “willing participant”.

The issue in the case, jurors have heard, “is one of consent”.

The trial continues.
