A woman used her walking stick to fight off a late-night attacker who grabbed her from behind.

The woman, aged in her 50s, was alone in the west of the city when she was attacked around 10pm Thursday.

Police say she was able to turn to face him and used her walking stick to fight him off.

The woman was not hurt and nothing was taken during the attack.

Police say it is not believed that the incident was sexually motivated.

They have also pledged to step up patrols in the area and have been carrying out door-to-door enquiries today.

The woman has described her attacker as a white male in his 20s, around 5ft 8inches tall, of slim build and wearing dark clothing.

After the attack he made off towards the area of Clift Street and Newtown Road.

Police have moved quickly to reassure the public.

Detective Constable Ian Chappell said: "Incidents like this are very rare in Cumbria and patrols attended the area very quickly in an effort to support the victim.

"I want to praise the victim for her quick thinking, and her bravery in helping the police with their enquiries.

"There will be an increased vigilance in the area, police have been door to door and are also working with the local community and businesses as part of the investigation."

Police are asking anyone who may have been walking or driving in the area of Newtown Road, Ruthella St and Lawson St around 9pm onwards and may have seen a lone female walking with a stick to contact officers with information, no matter who insignificant it may seem.
