An 86-year-old woman who died in a crash on the A689 near to Carlisle Airport has been named.

Police have also tonight released a tribute from the family of Maureen Smith, of Heads Nook.

Paying tribute to Mrs Smith, her family said: "It is with great sadness that Maureen (Mo) has so tragically been taken from us.

"She was a very much loved Mum, grandma, great grandma, sister and aunty who had many friends.

"She was a great believer in helping others dedicating a lot of time to family, friends, supporting charities and those in need. We will treasure every memory of her."
The crash happened at around 3.20pm yesterday, on the A689 at its junction with Irthington.

It involved a white Fiat Panda, which was being driven by Mrs Smith; a Mercedes HGV and a black Ford Fiesta.

The 19-year-old Brampton male driving the Fiesta was not injured.

The HGV driver, a 43-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and remains in custody.

Police are tonight renewing their appeal for witnesses to come forward.

In particular would like to identify two drivers who are believed to have been stationary waiting to turn onto the A689 from Irthington at the time of the collision.

Mrs Smith's family are being supported by specialist officers.

The road, a major route between Carlisle and Brampton, was closed for several hours following the incident and drivers were asked to avoid the area if possible.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call PC 2265 Jack Stabler on 101.
