A pensioner has died after her car was involved in a crash with a lorry on one of north Cumbria’s busiest roads.

The 74-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene of the incident, the A689 between Brampton and Linstock, east of Carlisle.

Emergency services were called out to the scene shortly after 12pm yesterday to reports of the two-vehicle collision between the junction for the A69 and Carlisle Road.

Firefighters from Carlisle’s two stations, along with the police and paramedics, were at the scene shortly after.

report stated: “Fire crews, one from Carlisle West and one from Carlisle East, attended the incident and used cutting equipment to remove a casualty from a car.

“Sadly a woman was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.”

The woman, who is from Brampton, was driving a blue Skoda Fabia while the other vehicle involved was a Mercedes 1324 wagon.

The HGV driver, a 65-year-old man from Lancaster, suffered no serious injuries as a result of the crash.

The road was closed in both directions between Brampton and Linstock for several hours while the police carried out collision investigation work.

A diversion was in place via the A69 and motorists experienced congestion in the Warwick Bridge and Corby Hill areas. The road reopened soon after 5pm.
