A man has revealed the final amount he's raised for charity by shaving off his waist-length dreadlocks.

Luke Henley, of Whitehaven, yesterday handed over the £3,238 he raised from his challenge to Hospice at Home West Cumbria.

The 26-year-old, who lives as Ash Grove, had been growing his prided hairstyle which included 45 dreadlocks, for eight years.

And when he faced the chop, he performed it in front of an audience at a head shaving party held at Whitehaven RUFC.

Deana Grills, the hospice's marketing and media coordinator, said: "On behalf of everyone at Hospice at Home West Cumbria I would like to say a huge big thank you to Luke for choosing us to benefit from the fantastic amount he raised through bravely shaving off his dreadlocks.

"Without the support of our local community we would not be able to raise the money we need to care for the hundreds of patients, carers and family members we look after each year.

"Thank you again to Luke and to everybody who donated and supported him."

Luke said: "I am pleased I made the decision to cut my hair for this charity and have been overwhelmed by the support and kindness shown.

"I can't thank everyone enough. I also can't believe how heavy the hair was and how cold my head now is! Thankfully I have a good supply of hats!

"I don't think I've have had short hair for nine years. This really hasn't been an easy decision to make, but it's time for a change!"

The idea for the dramatic alteration was his girlfriend's, Nikki Anderon, who as a community nurse suggested he raise the money for the charity.
