Almost 300 youngsters got a light-hearted history lesson at a West Cumbrian academy.

Year Five pupils from Ashfield Junior School, Beckstone Primary School, Distington Community School, Northside Primary School, Seaton Junior School, Victoria Junior School and Westfield Nursery and Primary School flocked to Workington Academy to take part in the Ancient Greece-themed day.

The event was organised to help children adjust to the transition into secondary school and built on the success of a previous David Walliams-themed day for primary school pupils held at the academy.

English teacher Hannah Calvert, who helped organise the day, said: "We've gone for Greece because of the popularity of the Percy Jackson novels and a lot of the pupils will have done some work on Ancient Greece already.

"The pupils seemed to be really enjoying it and it gets them mixing with children from other schools because we have a lot of them in the town and it stops them from sticking to their primary school cliques.

"It also gives them a chance to get into a secondary school and give them an idea of what moving up will be like."

Activities included tableaus and hot seating with Greek lunar goddesses, designing a flying machine to save a falling egg inspired by Icarus and creating their own gods and mythological creatures.

Youngsters dressed up in traditional clothing and also took part in a relay to represent the Olympics.

The academy's sixth form students also helped out, while Hercules was on hand to give pupils tips.

Another event will be held in autumn for Year Six pupils but the theme for that day has not yet been decided.
