A seven-year-old Cleator Moor boy who lost his mum two months ago has received hundreds of birthday cards from kind-hearted people.

Jack Moore's mum Nicola, 31, who was head chef and part owner of the Lowther Arms in Whitehaven, tragically died in October.

The youngster faced his first Christmas day birthday without her on Monday - and Cumbria Superheroes launched a campaign to help make his big day special.

Hundreds of well-wishers sent the superheroes cards and presents, with Spiderman delivering them to Jack on Christmas Eve, including a signed vest by British Olympians' Alistair and Jonny Brownlee.

In a post on Facebook, Cumbria Superheroes said: "Just been to see Jack he'd like to thank everyone that sent him a birthday or Christmas card!

"He's had a tough few months, don't know how he's coped. We would like to thank all you amazing people for throwing a big arm around him."

Jack and his family, with help from Nicola's friends, raised £1,100 for Mind in West Cumbria, a mental health charity, in her memory.

Chairman of Mind in West Cumbria, Dr Brian Campbell, gave Jack the running vest signed by triathletes Alistair and Jonny Brownlee for his birthday.

In a note to Jack, he said: "This is a shirt worn by the Brownlee brothers. They are two of the world's best and bravest sportsmen and it is right that one of the world's best and bravest boys should have it.

"They have autographed it. Alistair on the right side and Jonny on the left. If you google them you will see them in action wearing your shirt.

"All of us at Mind in West Cumbria wish you a Happy Christmas and a Happy Birthday. We shall never forget you or what you did for us. God bless you."

Money was collected for the charity through funeral donations and the sale of the charity's badges by her friends.
