Volunteers came together to help spruce up Workington town centre ahead of a county competition.

The Big Town Tidy-up was the first in a series of annual community clean-ups led by Allerdale council's Street Scene team.

On Monday 16 volunteers took on tasks such as weeding, painting and litter picking to help spruce up key areas ahead of Cumbria In Bloom judges' visit on Tuesday.

Toni Magean, town centre manager for Allerdale council, said: "We are really pleased with how the event went - we had a great turnout. We managed to get in to the nooks and cracks that are often left neglected.

"We collected 12 bags of rubbish in total and painted the seats and posts on Pow Street and Murray Road that were in need of a refresh. We also power washed a number of areas and signs leading in to the town.

"It's really lifted the area and we all had a real sense of pride and achievement afterwards."

A clean-up of Maryport town centre is taking place today.

Volunteers will also help give Aspatria a make over on Tuesday, July 11, starting from the town's library at 10am.

Anyone is invited to go along.
