Mobile phone giant Vodafone is rolling out 4G coverage in another part of Cumbria.

It started work to upgrade signal strength in Penrith last week - improving its 3G network at the same time.

A company spokesman said: "The arrival of 4G means all customers with compatible devices and bundles will be able to connect to the internet more quickly, more reliably and in more places than ever before.

"4G services will also help businesses improve productivity by enabling employees to work where they want to, when they want to."

Securing better mobile and broadband coverage is viewed by many as one of the key issues facing Cumbria.

The rural nature of the county, however, means that's proven difficult to achieve in many remote areas.

Vodafone claims it is leading the industry in developing innovative approaches to the challenge of poor coverage in rural areas.

It says its Rural Open Sure Signal programme has brought 3G coverage to 84 rural communities across the UK over the last two years.
