A man is facing a life prison term for his role in violence which broke out following a Carlisle party.

Martin Anthony Woodhead, 32, was charged along with two of his siblings after trouble flared in and around the city's Conservative Club on August 12.

At Carlisle Crown Court, he and his 31-year-old brother, David Anthony Woodhead, of Parkside in the city, entered guilty pleas to two violence charges - causing Michael Dutton grievous bodily harm with intent; and attempting to cause Ryan Gibbons grievous boldly harm with intent.

Their sister, Samantha Lindsey Woodhead, 30, denied the same two charges when she appeared in the dock alongside her two relatives last Monday. She admitted assaulting Jacqueline Deary by beating.

Samantha Woodhead returned to court on Friday and admitted charges of assaulting Mr Dutton and also Mr Gibbons, causing both actual bodily harm. She also pleaded guilty to an affray charge.

At the earlier court hearing, prosecutor Gerard Rogerson told Judge Peter Davies that Samantha Woodhead had been "the initial catalyst" for an incident captured on CCTV.

A physical confrontation had begun inside the club, before violence spilled outside.

As Ms Deary was acting as a "peacemaker", Samantha Woodhead was said to dragged her "by the hair to the road outside the club".

No details were given in court about the brothers' more serious offences. Background reports have been requested on all three relatives, who are due to be sentenced at the crown court on November 13.

But in court last Monday, defence barrister Greg Hoare said Martin Woodhead, of Chatsworth Square, Carlisle, had previously received an imprisonment for public protection (IPP) minimum term sentence. This is said to have been imposed for another violent attack.

"Clearly he is a candidate for life imprisonment for this (Conservative club) offence," he said

Samantha Woodhead, of Parkside, Carlisle, was granted bail until the date of sentence.

But Judge Davies told her: "Custody is the most likely sentence."
